When I painted "Lamento Borincano" I thought of all the Puerto Ricans of the past and present who left their homes, friends and families in search for a better quality of life. We all came here with hope for a better future. A "jibaro" is a Puerto Rican peasant, and in my painting he represents many of our grandparents who worked in the fields or in factories back in the 50s. Many of them who worked two jobs to be able to support us.
Times have changed and we have witnessed the class transformation of our people, but our dreams have always been the same always: Working, singing, taking care of our own. |
