After spending the last few months painting commissions, I was feeling a little like doing some thing for myself. Waves are an amazing energy and to me have many symboligical meanings for me in my dream-life and in the waking word.
They stir different reactions in different people on a physical level from sheer terror of being drowned or smashed on a reef to absolute bliss of surfing a perfect barrel or snorkelling the immense wonderland of reef they are breaking on. In mental sense they materialise as a subconscious swell upon a bommie consciousness forming a concentrated event of sudden impact and realisation, perfectly choreographed with precision and grace. Or similarly a subconscious emotional uprising to a crescendo of power and release of positive or negative consequence.
On the whole I think the wave can accurately sum up the subconscious coming into the conscious mind, whether it pulls you down or you ride the wave. Most of us at our best have a varying degrees of apprehension when it comes to water in the form of ocean, lake, river or backyard swimming pool. We can be merely uncomfortable with our fears or frozen in terror... An interesting issue seeing we are 75% water. We have even evolved from ocean dwelling creatures, having gills in the initial stage of foetal development of that 9 months while we are "en lemur" in the womb.
Whichever way we relate to it, as a pumping swell or a still quiet pool at its best & near drowning experiences, fear of sharks, seaweed, stingrays or getting out of our depth or just an irrational fear of the unknown. It is interesting to note that all of these feelings seem to be reflections on our emotional, physical, mental and spiritual state.
